A Park Forest man died from abdominal cavity bleeding late last week after he was hit by bean-bag rounds fired by police.
The incident all began when authorities were called about a combative resident at the Victory Centre senior apartments near Chicago. When they arrived on scene, they found John Wrana, 95, refusing to cooperate with apartment officials who were trying to involuntarily take him to a medical facility.
Investigators said Wrana was threatening paramedics and authorities with a cane and a metal shoehorn before picking up a “12-inch butcher type kitchen knife”.
After ignoring several demands to drop the blade, authorities attempted to use a Taser to subdue Wrana. The Taser had little effect on the 95-year-old, so officers tried to stop him with non-lethal rounds. After hitting him with a round of bean bags, Wrana was taken into custody.
Wrana was conscious as he was taken into the hospital, but doctors later discovered he was suffering from hemoperitoneum, more commonly known as bleeding in the stomach. Doctors said the condition was caused by the blunt force trauma to the abdomen from the bean bags. Wrana later succumbed to his injuries.
Wrana’s death as been ruled a homicide, and the Park Forest Police are reviewing the incident.
